Most men have at least a few dress shirts tucked away in their closets, and they usually come in one of three styles:
Athletic Fit – This style of shirt is generally suited to men with a slimmer build, it is a shirt that is tapered much more dramatically than the modern fit. The athletic fit shirt is a staple of designer brands such as Calvin Klein and Hugo Boss and is typically carried by retail clothing sellers such as Superdry. These shirts are suited for going out to a club or bar, but they also work as a sharp business shirt for thinner men. A modern or classic fit shirt may look too baggy on a thin man, and so athletic fit can be substituted. It can really give your outfit an urban edge and suits modern aesthetics quite well.
Modern Fit – Though typically advertised as the “latest” look, there has been some variation of this shirt for several decades. This is a more moderately tapered shirt than the athletic fit, making it appropriate for a wider group. Just about anyone can look good in this shirt, whether you have an average build, slightly thin or just a bit on the heavy side. Marketers like to use the phrase semi-fitted when describing this shirt, so check for this phrase when going through the racks. This shirt looks great in the office or for more formal events. Whether you are enjoying a night on the town with the boys or a romantic dinner for two, this shirt will look great.
Classic Fit – This fit looks pretty much as it sounds. It is the most common type of dress shirt available and has been around the longest. Most classic fit shirts are not tapered, which provides generous room and utmost comfort for those that have a heavier build. Although, its popularity has been waning since the invasion of the modern fit into the fashion market. Until recently, the modern fit shirt could only be found at high end stores; with their introduction into the mass marketplace, more men are choosing this updated look. However, the classic cut will not be making a mass exodus from shelves anytime soon. Men who desire a more formal appearance, along with any guy that fits into the big and tall category, will still favor the classic cut dress shirt.
Many men are not sure which shirt style will fit their look best. While the classic cut is always a safe choice, use the guide above to choose one of the other styles that might fit your style and personality. You might actually find a style that fits your size and personality better than your existing wardrobe.
